HI! I am Fr. John Haugen and am happy as pastor to the faith communities of Saint Patrick, St. Mark, St. Joseph, St. Mary and Sacred Heart, to welcome you!  I was born and raised in Waterloo Iowa, the oldest of seven children. My parents John and Cy, are retired in Cedar Falls. In college I studied music education and philosophy. I went to seminary at The Saint Paul Seminary, (St. Paul, MN), and was ordained in 1984, afterwards having the opportunity to attend Creighton University, earning a Masters in Spiritual Direction and Retreat work.  I have spent twenty-three years in education and administration (high school and college), and have served on several Archdiocesan Committees including Worship, Board of Education and Church Design and Renovation Commission. This is indeed an exciting time in the Church as Christ calls us to ever deeper discipleship and participation in His body, the Church.

Hi! My name is Cheryl Holtz. I am the secretary/bookkeeper for St. Mark and St. Patrick parishes and have worked for the church for 5 ½ years.  Prior to working here at the church, I worked for Wal-Mart in Manchester.   I have been married to my husband Don for 38 years.  We have three sons and nine grandchildren, who entertain me and keep me busy. I like to read, crochet, and spend time with my family.

 John Holtz

Maintenance, St. Mark

Hi! My name is John Holtz; I’m a custodian at St. Mark Parish.  I’ve been married to my wife, Jan, for 41 years.  I grew up in the Strawberry Point area and farmed on the family farm for several years.  For many years, I was a truck driver, retiring from that profession in the fall of 2015, when I started at St. Mark.  I love gardening, so each summer I plant a large garden, sharing my produce with friends and neighbors.  I always like to try something new, so this year I planted black tomatoes.  It’s still too early to tell if they are a success or not.

Hi, my name is Lori Keppler and this Faith Formation coordination is all new to me, but I have a great team to work with and we are having a great time sharing our faith. I have taught Faith Formation in some form or fashion for over 20 years.

My husband Paul and I have been married for 28 years and have three adult children and three grandchildren. Empty nesting seems to be working for us because we are busier than we have ever been.

I'm looking forward to continuing to develop my faith and I hope to encourage others to do the same.

Hi! I am Sr. Carla Popes, PBVM. I am a Dubuque Presentation Sister. I have taught in Catholic Schools, served parishes as Director of Faith Formation and the Archdiocesan Office of Catechetical Services as Director of Lay Formation and Office of Special Needs in the Archdiocese of Dubuque for 19 years. I served as Vocation Director for the Presentation Sisters several years before coming to the winding roads of northeast Iowa. Since 2010, I have ministered in various capacities within the three linked parishes of St. Mary Strawberry Point, St. Joseph Elkader and Sacred Heart Volga.  Presently I serve St. Mary Parish as Pastoral Associate and also am engaged with Faith Formation. I am simply delighted to be part of our new Emmaus Pastorate and honored to meet and work with so many faith filled people. Yes, it is truly about connecting and building relationships.  Every day, I thank God for this most wonderful gift. In addition to working with the families, I enjoy tending to my big garden in the spring and summer, and sharing the produce and canned goods with others.  I pray daily to be as courageous in serving the needs of God’s people as my community foundress Nano Nagle.

Hello, I am Janie Wiley, secretary for St. Joseph’s Parish, Elkader, Iowa.

I share my life with my husband, John Wiley - 13 years. John and I have a blended family of eight adult children (and their spouses), fifteen incredible grandchildren, and one precious great-granddaughter. I am a southerner by heart and by birth as I was born in South Florida-resided 40 years; Atlanta Georgia –  resided 10+ years.

God truly had it in his plan to relocate me to Littleport, Iowa in 2000. He continued to work in my Christian life as he brought me into the Catholic faith in 2001, for which I am truly thankful.

In the fall of 2010 God once again took me by the hand and led me to St. Joseph parish where I joined the team of staff as parish secretary. And for that and all of his many blessings which he has given to me, I give him thanks and praise.
