The original Sacred Heart Church was a frame structure built in 1889. The first Mass was celebrated Easter Sunday, April 2, 1899, and the dedication took place June 7, 1900.
In 1924, Father Hetherington had a dream to build a new church; so on the same day, the first sod was turned. The old frame structure was razed and the lumber salvaged for use in the new structure. The church has a limestone foundation and brown burnt brick walls. After the completion, the dedication took place on September 8, 1925.
Throughout the years, improvements have been made such as inside stairwell to the basement, cushioned pews, new front glass doors, and a handicap ramp was built. In 2010, steel roofing was installed to replace the hail damaged roof
In 1999, the church was affected by the flood, with 4 feet of water in the basement. The kitchen was gutted and remodeled, and the floor tile replaced. Again in 2004, the basement went through a flood but did not sustain as much damage since the flooding was mostly ground seepage water.
We remain a small, vibrant, and viable parish and welcome all who come through our doors. So remember, don’t just GO to Church, BE Church.
